TMJ/TMD
Tempromandibular Joint Dysfunction
Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a common cause of long-lasting jaw and facial pain. It can interfere with your daily life, affecting everything from your work to your personal relationships and overall well-being.
Dr. Koterwas can diagnose TMD and offer treatment options tailored to your needs. One effective treatment for certain patients is Botulinum toxin, also known by the brand name Xeomin. This treatment can reduce the frequency, intensity, and duration of TMD symptoms—especially in patients who haven't found relief with other therapies like medications or mouthguards.
Why Xeomin?
-
Long-lasting relief: Most patients begin to feel improvement a few weeks after the injection.
-
Low risk of side effects: Side effects are usually mild, temporary, and uncommon.
-
Well-studied: Clinical trials have shown Xeomin to be safe and effective when given every 6 to 20 weeks (with the average being around 12 weeks).
What to Expect
-
Follow-up visit: You'll return about 3–4 weeks after your first injection so Dr. Koterwas can check your response and note any side effects.
-
Possible booster: If your pain hasn’t improved enough, you may be offered a booster injection.
-
Customized treatment: Everyone responds differently, so future injections are scheduled based on how you're feeling and what’s noted during exams. You may be asked to keep a simple pain diary to help guide your treatment plan.
-
Relief takes time: It may take several weeks to feel full relief.
-
Results vary: Some patients get relief for longer than the typical 12 weeks.
-
Adjustments are normal: Your response to treatment may change over time, so your dosing schedule might need to be adjusted.
